Well you know, Sun's an artist herself. She had a project going. She was working with hay. She was using many bales of hay to create a project. She was out in the field and she'd been working on it for a couple of weeks. Every day when she finishes her job working on this, among the other things she does like going to school, she stops by the studio and checks out Dad to see how he's doing. She loves to look at his paintings. They're so psychedelic. All these crazy lines and colors, and there's always a new one. And when she walks in and takes a look at it, first it just looks like a big blur. And after a while you keep lookin' and you see all these faces lookin' at you and things happening, people talking to each other, babies being born, wars, people in love, all in the middle of all of these lines. Daddy just turns and looks at her and gives her a big smile. He's never sold a painting.
He takes off in his Winnebago all loaded up with paintings to give it another shot, go down to the galleries and make the rounds and try to unload a few paintings. Gotta love the guy - he never stops, he never quits. He believes he's doing something good, and he never stops. He doesn't wait to see what people think because he knows it's good. So he takes off in his Winnebago.
Later that night, the devil shows up in Earl's studio and cleans his glasses. He picks his glasses up off the easel and blows on 'em - Hahhhhhhhhhhhh. Then he takes his little red hankie out of his jacket, cleans those glasses off and puts them down. The devil's a very dapper-looking guy: he has a red jacket and red patent leather shoes and a Panama hat with a red hatband on it. He's very meticulously dressed, and he does a great job with everything he tries to do because he's so thorough. There's nothing haphazard about this particular Satan. So these glasses are now the cleanest glasses on the planet. They're just glistening. And the devil looks at them and looks around at all the paintings and disappears.
Later that night, Earl comes back to his studio. He puts on his glasses, starts painting. And he paints something he's never seen before. He has it in his head, but he doesn't know what it is. But it's not psychedelic, it's an actual person, looking right at him with a red jacket and red patent leather shoes and a Panama hat with a hatband on it, looking right at Earl, holding a sign that says "Alaska." And he's got his thumb out; he's hitchhiking. Earl has finished the painting in no time at all. The painting looks quite unusual. Sun comes in and sees the painting, and she's a little bit disturbed by it. It's so unlike his other paintings, and actually she has a negative reaction to it, which is the first time she's ever had a negative reaction to anything her dad has painted. She doesn't know how to handle it, so she just doesn't say anything. She just stands there without an expression on her face.
Earl loads the painting into his Winnebago and says, "I'm gonna give this a shot. I'm taking this down to the gallery right now. And we'll see if they're interested." So he takes it down there, to Lenore's gallery in Greendale - where, the last time he was there, she'd given back his other paintings and told him not to bring any more. "Don't come back." But you know Earl: he just comes back, he keeps goin'. So he walks in with this painting of you-know-who hitchhiking, and Lenore sees it and she's just knocked out. This is the most fabulous, unbelievable painting she's ever seen. She is really impressed with Earl's new painting. And she says, "I want to put this in the most prominent part of the shop, right here, put it up there so everybody can see it when they come in. This is great, Earl. If you ever paint anything else like this - well as a matter of fact, anything else you paint from now on, just bring it right in here."
So Earl's - y'know, this is a big change. He's happy but he's a little confused. But he's very happy. Success is quite a feeling. Just the night before had been the lowest point of Earl's life. He was sure he was a failure, he was haunted by the past, he was haunted by his memories - he couldn't get some of the pictures out of his mind. No matter how much he painted, he couldn't forget the things that he knew. And nobody would buy his paintings. So after a day of trying to sell the paintings in the Winnebago, he was so depressed he just decided to not go home and instead stay in a motel in Greendale. He checked in to the motel, put his laptop computer out on the bed, tried to get on the Internet and turned on the TV, put on the Nature Channel. He tried to get on eBay and see if there was any way he could sell his paintings, maybe auction them off or something, you know? That works for other people. So that was the low point for Earl just the other night, and now let's stay here with Earl for a minute.

Papi se gira y la mira con una amplia sonrisa. Nunca ha vendido un cuadro.
Sale con su autocaravana Winnebago(*3*) cargada de cuadros para dar otra batida por las galerías y, a base de insistir, ver de conseguir colocar alguno. Está convencido de que está haciendo algo bueno y no ceja. No espera a ver la reacción de la gente porque sabe que es bueno. Por eso sale con su Winnebago.
Esa noche el diablo se aparece en el estudio de Earl y limpia sus gafas. Coge las gafas del caballete y sopla en ellas --aaahhhhh--. Luego saca el pañuelito rojo de su chaqueta, limpia las gafas y las vuelve a dejar donde estaban. Salta a la vista que el diablo es un tipo de cuidada vestimenta: lleva una chaqueta roja, unos zapatos de charol rojos y un sombrero de panamá con una cinta roja. Va meticulosamente vestido y cuida los detalles de todo lo que hace porque es muy concienzudo. Este Satán no deja nada a la buena de Dios. Así que las gafas son ahora las más limpias del planeta. Han quedado relucientes. El diablo las mira, luego mira los cuadros y a continuación desaparece.
Poco después, Earl vuelve al estudio. Se pone las gafas y comienza a pintar. Y pinta algo que no había visto nunca antes. Lo tiene en su cabeza pero no sabe qué es con exactitud. No es psicodélico, es una persona real que le está mirando fijamente con una chaqueta roja, unos zapatos rojos de charol y un sombrero de panamá con una banda; está mirando a Earl y sosteniendo un letrero que pone "Alaska" con el pulgar hacia fuera: está haciendo autostop. No sabe qué decir y se limita a guardar silencio. Tan sólo se queda inmóvil e inexpresiva.
Earl carga el cuadro en su Winnebago y dice: "Voy a probar suerte con éste. Me lo llevo para la galería ahora mismo. A ver si les interesa". Y se encamina hacia la galería de Lenore(*4*) en Greendale, dónde la última vez que estuvo la dueña le devolvió sus cuadros y le dijo que no se molestase en llevarle más. "No vuelva". Paro ya sabemos cómo es Earl: él insiste, no ceja. Así que entra con su cuadro de quién-tú-sabes haciendo autostop bajo el brazo y Lenore se lo queda mirando sorprendida. Es la pintura más fabulosa e increíble que haya visto antes. Y le dice: "Quiero ponerla en el lugar más destacado de la tienda, justo aquí, para que cualquiera que entre la vea. Es genial, Earl. Si otra vez pintas algo como ésto, bueno, seguro que todo lo que pintes a partir de ahora, traémelo directamente."
Para Earl, os podéis imaginar, ha sido un golpe de suerte. Está contento aunque un tanto confuso; pero muy contento. El éxito es más bien una sensación. Precisamente la noche anterior Earl había pasado uno de los momentos más bajos de su vida. Estaba convencido de que era un fracasado, estaba atrapado por su pasado, obsesionado por sus recuerdos --no se podía quitar de la cabeza ciertas pinturas--. Por mucho que pintara no podía olvidar lo que sabía. Y nadie había comprado sus cuadros. Tras todo el día intentando colocar alguno de los que llevaba en la Winnebago estaba tan deprimido que decidió quedarse en un hotel en Greendale para no tener que volver a casa. Se registró en el motel, sacó el portatil dispuesto a navegar por Internet desde la cama y con la TV en el Canal Naturaleza. Entró en eBay en un intento de ofrecer desde allí sus cuadros, subastándolos, por ejemplo. Estas cosas funcionan para los demás. Este fue el momento bajo de Earl la noche pasada pero ahora acompañemosle unos minutos.
