Well, when Grandpa died, that really was - at the studio there, we were kind of bummed out when that happened. Because I'd been writing these songs for a couple of weeks, and every day I'd come in with a new song. I had no idea what I was doing. I'd never written songs with characters in them - at least not two in a row with the same characters. So we kinda watched it unfold in the studio, and we got attached to some of these characters. And we used to talk about 'em like they were real. And I didn't know where they came from - it's not like I think them up; they just kind of happen if you're ready. So I try to be ready, and I write down whatever happens. 'Cause when I was a little kid, I used to go up into the attic and watch my dad write. He wrote about 40 novels. He wrote a lot of books. And he used to be pounding his typewriter up there. I was just about 3 or 4 years old and I went up there and I looked at him and said, "What're you doing?" He turned around and looked at me and said, "I'm writing." I said, "Well, what're you writing?" He said, "I don't know. I just write. If I come up here and I start writing, things come out." I didn't understand that. But years later I'm thinking to myself, "Well, now I'm doing what he did. I'm writing a story - it's a book, but it's songs. I'm a singer. So that's okay, you can do this."
But when Grandpa died - well, he was my favorite character. I'm gonna have another drink. Here's to you, Grandpa, wherever you are. So after that, I didn't write any songs for a couple of days, and we were wondering if it was over. But then I woke up one morning and I thought, "Where's Grandma? What's happening?" And then on my way over to the studio I stopped a couple of times in my car, as is my habit, just sit there for a while. I find if I stop somewhere, I might write something. When I stop writing, I just move on to the next place and stop there and look around, and pretty soon I'm writing again. So that morning I got over to the studio and we did this one here.
El abuelo había muerto, ya estaba hecho. En el estudio todos quedamos afectados por el acontecimiento. Yo había estado escribiendo estas canciones durante las dos últimas semanas y cada día llegaba con una nueva canción. No tenía idea de lo que estaba haciendo. Nunca antes había escrito canciones con personajes, bueno al menos no dos seguidas con los mismos protagonistas. Si vengo aquí y me pongo a escribir, fluye". No comprendía lo que me decía. Pero años después, yo mismo me digo: "Estoy haciendo lo que él. Estoy escribiendo una historia, un libro pero de canciones. Soy un cantante. Eso está bien, tú puedes hacerlo".
El abuelo había muerto y era mi personaje favorito. Creo que voy a tomar un trago. ¡A tu salud, Abuelo; donde quiera que estés!. Así que después de eso no escribí nada durante un par de días y estuve considerando en dejarlo como estaba. Pero una mañana me levanté y me dije "¿Y la Abuela?. ¿Qué ha sido de ella?". Y de camino al estudio paré el coche un par de veces, como siempre, allí sentado un tiempo. Se me ocurrió que si paraba en algún lugar podría escribir algo. Y cuando acabo de escribir, me muevo hasta otro lugar, paro, miro alrededor y en un abrir y cerrar de ojos ya estoy escribiendo de nuevo. Así que esa mañana retomé la sesión de estudio e hicimos la que sigue.
Bringin' down dinner
The evening fog was rolling in. It was getting hard to see. The old white car edged down the road, Headed for the Double E.
She was bringin' down dinner for Grandpa. It was crawlin' with vitamins and tender as a mother's love, When she saw the TV masts.
The side door was open, there were three TVs, Grandpa's face was on every one. He was talking to a woman with a microphone. She was sexy and her hair was all done.
Sun Green came down and met Grandma then. "My you're such a beautiful girl. Mother Earth needs more like you. You should go out now, see the world."
"What's Grandpa doin' on the TV? I've got his dinner in the car. All these vans have blocked our way, But we can carry it, it's not too far."
Llevando la cena
La niebla nocturna se iba extendiendo y dificultaba la visión. El antiguo coche blanco enfiló la carretera (*1*) hacia el Doble E.
Llevaba la cena del abuelo, cuajada de vitaminas y ternura materna, cuando vio las antenas de TV.
La puerta lateral estaba abierta, había tres monitores y la cara del abuelo aparecía en todos. Hablaba con una mujer con un micrófono. Una mujer sexy y de cabello bien arreglado.
Sun Green llegó y coincidió con la abuela: "Realmente eres una chica muy guapa. La Madre Tierra necesita mucha gente como tú. Deberías salir y ver mundo."
"¿Qué hace el abuelo en la tele? Tengo su cena en el coche. Estas furgonetas nos bloquean el paso pero la llevaremos a mano, no está muy lejos."
